Guide for learners
Sign in, find your classes, join a live session, ask and vote on questions, take quizzes and exams, hand in assignments, and look back at past sessions.
Who this guide is for
You take part in your organisation's classes. Each class is taught live by an AI teacher, on a timetable, following a lesson plan your organisation approved.
Before you start
There are three ways in:
You were invited: open the link in your invitation email and choose a password.
You registered on your organisation's public page: select Create an account there.
You have a join link or a class code: you can join that class as a guest, without an account, while its lobby is open.
To sign in, open your organisation's address and select Sign in. If the page offers Continue with Akadesk and you have a Akadesk account, use it. Otherwise enter the email your organisation invited and your password; pupils whose school manages their account sign in with a username instead. With a class code and no account, select Join as a guest.
Find your way around
The app works in a web browser on a computer, a tablet or a phone. The pages are the same; only where the menu sits changes.
On a computer, the menu is down the left side: Home, Courses (once you are on a course), Classes, History and Profile, in your organisation's own words, with Join with a class code and the language switch (English or French). On a tablet the same pages are icons down the left side, with Code for joining with a class code.
The app starts in the same light or dark setting as your device. The language you choose is also the language of the emails your organisation sends you.
Use it on your phone
Open your organisation's address in your phone's browser and sign in.
The browser may offer, once, to put the app on your home screen, with your organisation's name, logo and colour. Select Install app (on an iPhone, the message tells you to use the Share button, then Add to Home Screen), or Not now to skip it. It then opens straight to your classes.
A bar along the bottom holds your tabs: Today (your Home), Classes (in your organisation's words), and Courses once you are on a course, or History until then.
The fifth tab, More, opens your Profile, History or Certificates (whichever has no tab), Join with a class code, Switch organisation when you belong to more than one, Appearance (System, Light or Dark), Language and Sign out.
If your connection drops, a banner says You're offline. Classes need a connection; the app carries on when you are back.
Home: what is coming up
Home (the Today tab on a phone) shows your next sessions, in your own time zone, with the organisation's time zone beside it.
Your classes
Open Classes (Cohorts in some organisations) for every class you can join, with its AI teacher and next session. Open one for its details and upcoming sessions.
To join a class you were given a code for, select Join with a class code (in More on a phone).
Join a live session
A few minutes before the start, the session's lobby opens. Select it from Home (Today on a phone) or from the class.
The session starts when the first participant arrives. The AI teacher welcomes the room and teaches the lesson, with captions and a board.
Post a question on the question board, and vote on other people's. The teacher answers the questions with the most votes.
Raise your hand to speak. When the teacher hands you the microphone, your browser asks for permission to use it.
The session ends at the end of the slot.
Courses and certificates
A course is a series of lessons with a start date. Attend enough of them and you complete it, often with a certificate.
Open the course from your organisation's public page and choose a Start date.
Sign in, or create an account, to enrol. A free course enrols you at once. For a paid course you go to a payment page or are shown an account number and the exact amount to transfer from your bank app; once the payment is confirmed the page says Payment received — you're enrolled, and your receipt is emailed to you.
Open Courses (a tab on a phone) to see each course with how much you have completed and your next lesson. Open one for its lessons, what you still need to attend, and your Receipts.
When you complete a course with a certificate, it appears under Certificates (in More on a phone). Select Download PDF, or share its verify link: anyone can check it is genuine.
If your organisation refunds a payment, it is marked Refunded (or Partly refunded) under Receipts.
Some courses also need a course total, as well as attendance, to complete. The course page says so. A certificate may show your final result and grade.
Quizzes, assignments and exams
Open a course to see its Quizzes and assessments, each with its state: Open, Being marked, Done and so on.
Quiz: select Start. Your answers save as you go. If there is a time limit, the time left shows at the top and your answers are submitted when it runs out. Select Submit when you are done. If more attempts are allowed, select Try again.
Exam: like a quiz, but it only opens during its window and you usually have one attempt. Each learner gets their own questions in their own order.
Assignment: read the instructions and any files from your teacher. Write your answer, add files if you like (up to 10, 25 MB each), and select Hand in. Until it is marked you can select Change my submission. After the due date, work may be refused, or accepted but marked late, sometimes with a penalty: the page says which.
Multiple choice answers are marked at once. Short answers and assignments are marked by your teacher, and exam results come when your teacher releases them. You get an email when a result is ready, with any feedback and returned files.
During a live session, the teacher may ask a check question: a box appears on screen, on the web and in the phone app, while the lesson carries on. Type your answer and select Send answer, or close the box to skip it. Guests who joined with a class code only listen.
Your results
On a course's page, Your results shows your score in quizzes, assignments and exams, your course total and your grade. Select Download my result report for a PDF of your attendance and results. If your organisation allows it, select Share a link to my report and send the link to anyone: select Stop sharing to withdraw it.
Look back
Open History (a tab on a phone until you are on a course, then in More) for your past sessions. For each one, Transcript shows what the teacher said and the questions answered, and Notes shows the class notes.
Your profile
Open Profile (at the top of More on a phone) to change the name shown beside your questions, choose your Appearance and Language, switch to another organisation you belong to, or sign out: Sign out here, or Sign out everywhere.
The phone app
Your organisation may also use the AI Learning phone app. It has the lobby, the live classroom with captions, the question board, raised hands, the microphone and check questions, your history with transcripts, and your courses' quizzes, assignments, exams and results. To hand in an assignment in the app, select Add a file, then Choose a file for a document or any other file the web takes, or Take a photo of paper work. Each file shows its progress as it uploads; if one fails, select Retry or remove it.
Tips and common questions
I cannot see a class. You may not be enrolled in it. Ask your organisation, or request access from its public page.
I forgot my password. Select Forgot password? on the sign-in page and follow the email.
The microphone does not work. Allow microphone access for your organisation's address in your browser settings, then rejoin.
My mark says results to come. Your work is marked, but your teacher has not released the results yet. You get an email when they do.
Getting help
Ask your organisation first: its contact details are on its public page.
Try it yourself in the live demo.
